This little village is situated on the outskirts of Periyar Wild life Sanctuary in the Idukki district of Kerala, 15 kms. or half an hour excursion from its home town Kumily. Nestled in the unending chains of hills of the Western Ghats (1200 meters above from sea level) and the cool mountain air make Chellarkovil a perfect holiday retreat. Chellarkovil eco tourism cater to a number of community based Eco tourism program mes of this region. The ecotourism activities are envisaged to centre around at Chellarkovil Ecotourism Community centre. This land is vested with the Forest Department, Government of Kerala. Years ago this was an isolated barren land, had a bad reputation to host some anti social elements like smugglers, ‘moon shiners’, poachers etc. In the year 2005, the villagers submitted a project proposal to the Forest Department to constitute an environmental protection committee and got its sanction. After the achievement of basic organizational setup, arranged essential minimum funding from the State Eco tourism and Forest Departments, the project was inaugurated on 5th of May 2008 by the honourable Forest Minister for the State. The facilities include a number of huts, a lovely watch tower, path ways, a her barium of medicinal plants, a tourist amenity center and an ecoshop. Adhering to the true concept of environment preservation and protection, the project got a head start right from its beginning. Raising the issues of environment protection in a very rural neighborhood like this resulted to a paradigm shift in the mind set of many villagers.

Attractions

Atop on the Western Ghats in Kerala, Chellarkovil village borders with the Tamilnadu State. Long stretches of uninhabited bush land demarks the two states where one can overlook into the unmatched scenic beauty of Tamilnadu plains as a birds eye view. At times nothing can be seen around , except the whiteness of the mist and the next moment a wind would sweep it unveiling the green valley almost 3000fts.down below. This program is designed partly like a border hiking. There are nature trails to follow. Here nothing comes before you other than freshness of nature as you walk along the beautiful landscape consisting of rare plants, wild flowers, bushes, cliffs, brooks and streams. Its terrains commune with nature at its tranquil best and a casual walk along its plantations or a rugged jungle trail will be rejuvenating. The other side of the village are country roads passing through different terrains. This contoured land is verdant with plantation of pepper, cardamom, coffee, turmeric, ginger, clove, nutmeg, vanilla etc. and long stretches of high altitude paddy (rice) fields. There are small holdings of high land farmers around the village. The practice of inter cropping (poly culture) and rearing live stock in their home premises provides them organic farming inputs which is the secret behind the freshness, flavour or aroma of their wonderful produce!. An interaction with the local people will help to know more about their life and culture.
